Mama’s Hot Tamales Cafe: tortilla soup, beef adobo tamale in banana leaf and chicken tamale in corn husk.
Pick two out of three: fast, cheap and good. This is the case with most things in life: you can’t have all three; and choosing a dining option does not usually come as an exception (keeping in mind, by “good,” I do mean good for you). But then comes Mama’s Hot Tamales Cafe hitting a home run by hitting all three bases with their $2.50 tamales, which have zero trans fat and come lard free (the non-dessert ones, of course) and are even available with vegan options! The part of me that embraces this place so much actually goes beyond the food: Since its opening, Mama’s Hot Tamales Cafe has targeted its efforts in the revitalization of the community it’s in, which unfortunately has a longstanding history of drug and criminal activity. By selling local art and encouraging other businesses like itself, such as Langer’s Deli famed for its pastrami sandwich even by the likes of Pulizter Prize award winning Jonathan Gold, to continue its business, the MacArthur Park area is diluted with other activity besides what it has become notorious for. See here for more information on these revitalization efforts. And, really, do make a point to stop by and have a bite to eat here. If you need a less hokey reason than doing your bit to making the world a better place, dine here because the restaurant’s atmosphere is sweet, the staff even sweeter and your stomach will sing the sweetest praises for feeding it such goodness. Honest!
